Hale Makua Health Services provides care for elderly Maui residents who couldn’t otherwise afford it. This remarkable non-profit organization is the only one of its kind on the island. Our very own Roy Sakamoto has been on the board of directors for 30 years, working hard to help it continue to provide these invaluable services to our respected kupuna (elders).

Roy’s passion for this work began long ago, when his mother was being tended at Hale Makua. He was so impressed by their compassionate care, that he got involved in the special events committee. Before long, he had helped Hale Makua earn its place as the designated charity for the PGA Senior Tour’s Kaanapali Classic. In the years since he began his involvement, he has been a board member and board chairman. He is now serving as the board’s treasurer.

Hale Makua continues to provide around-the-clock care and personalized services for the elderly at both its Wailuku and Kahului facilities. It remains the largest provider of nursing home and health care for the elderly, here on Maui, and also bears the distinction of being the only Eden Alternative-registered home in the state of Hawaii. Roy, himself, best described their efforts.

“Besides our nursing home facilities in Wailuku and Kahului, we also offer the best home health agency on Maui, physical rehab, adult day care and a section of our Wailuku facility has been designated as a ‘care home’ for those that do not need full nursing home care. We are the only not-for-profit institutional nursing facility on Maui.”

As Roy also explains, health care on Maui is in need of extra support from the community, as the facilities struggle to keep up with the number of patients that need care. Hale Makua Health Services, if expanded further, could go a long way to helping give care to those who need it. In fact, the cost of having patients at Hale Makua is much cheaper than having them in the hospitals.

The best way to help further these efforts on behalf of the community is to pick up the phone and contact state and county lawmakers for fiscal help from the county and the state. Allocating funds to Hale Makua is the affordable choice, and the quality of care is excellent. With some extra help from conscientious residents like Roy Sakamoto, life on Maui can be even better for those who need care.

As you can see, Roy’s life is about more than his work as a West Maui real estate agent.
