Kapalua Village marks a significant milestone for those who lost everything in the catastrophic 2023 Lahaina wildfire. This new community, the first privately-funded temporary housing initiative on Maui, offers a beacon of stability and normalcy for many Kapalua-based employees who were displaced by the disaster.
The newly developed Kapalua Village, located atop the beautiful grounds of the former Village Course at Kapalua, comprises 50 temporary modular homes supplied by Daiwa House Group, a leader in prefab housing from Japan. These units are designed for comfort and functionality, featuring two, three, and four-bedroom configurations; each fully equipped with essential appliances and furniture, a kitchen, bathroom, as well as air conditioning, and more, ensuring a comfortable living environment for the residents.
Spearheaded by Mr. Tadashi Yanai, the founder and CEO of Uniqlo, the construction of Kapalua Village was accomplished in just over six months thanks to the collaborative efforts of international and local community members, businesses, and government entities. The project also received strong support from Gov. Josh Green, M.D., Mayor Richard Bissen and his staff at the County of Maui, and Maui-based architect Atom Kasprzycki. Since the project’s inception in February, more than twenty homes have already been completed, with the remaining units expected to be finished by September.
We wish to thank Yanai-san and all those involved in this project who have come together and supported the residents of Maui in our time of need. Many Mahalos!
