On May 12th the Roy and Betty Sakamoto Inaugural Scholarship was awarded to Lewilyn Guiterrez. The scholarship will continue for four years assuming that she continues to be in good standing with her college and her grades. Lewilyn will be attending University of Hawaii Maui College where she will study business. We were extremely excited about being involved in this scholarship program. The event took place at the Royal Lahaina Hotel, located in the heart of the Kaanapali Beach Resort.
The young people of Lahainaluna High School are unbelievable. One student, Maiki Viela, was award a Gonzaga University Athletic Scholarship which I understand is valued at approximately $300,000 for her four years. Viela was also named All-American. This Parade Recognition is believed to be the first for an MIL athlete. (See Maui News front page sports section May 10, 2011).
We feel extremely blessed that we have been able to provide a scholarship to a graduate of Roy’s Alma Mater (Class of 1960) as well as the Alma Mater of our daughter Julie “Ehu” Flynn Sherlock who graduated from Lahainaluna in 1982. Roy’s Dad, Hiroshi Sakamoto, was the first in the family to graduate from Lahainaluna with a diploma from the Territory of Hawaii in the early 1920’s.
