“Aloha!” For frequent followers of our blog, Facebook, or Twitter, you likely have seen this word used quite frequently. Even if you have not yet been following Sakamoto Properties for long (?!) you have likely seen and heard the term “Aloha” throughout the years. Popularized of late by the hugely successful children’s movie Lilo and Stitch, as well as the runaway hit re-boot of television series Hawaii Five-O, Aloha it would seem, is everywhere. While this is certainly true (as those lucky enough to own a home in Kapalua, or whom are considering such a purchase) on our beautiful Maui home, what some may not know is the true meaning of the word Aloha, as it is used today.

Often spoken as a means of expressing a friendly “Hello” in Hawaii, to those who live on our island paradise, Aloha takes on a new meaning from the moment you set foot in your Maui home. As long time residents know, Aloha in Hawaii means much more than just “Hi.” Aloha here extends far beyond a simple greeting; taking on a descriptive definition of what it is to live in Paradise, with an attitude to match. Described as the “Aloha Spirit” or “Living Aloha,” Aloha in Hawaii is perhaps best described as a set of guidelines to living in Hawaii:

1. Treat others with the same respect which you would like to be extended to yourself.

2. Give without the expectation of receiving something in return.

3. Be quick to forgive.

4. Remember that in Hawaii we are all Ohana (family.)

5. Smile!

Even when you are not at your Maui home, remember that it is always a good idea to practice the true meaning of Aloha for a healthier, happier lifestyle!
