Once again, Kapalua’s inspiring vistas and Maui’s famous aloha welcomed last year’s champions to the first PGA tournament of the year. Jonathan Byrd showed us all how much fun the Plantation Course can be by winning a play off after leading the field with a staggering 24 under par.
Robert Garrigus took second after also finishing 24 under par but missing a three foot put. He has nothing to be ashamed, though, he played a marvelous long game in light but shifting winds. Some other players struggled, not all could find a balance playing with the Trades on one day and against the Kona breeze the next.
The small field of 32 on one of the longest courses in the PGA gave this tournament a very relaxed and friendly atmosphere. The spectators and players seemed to thoroughly enjoy themselves. Having experienced all Maui has to offer, we hope that these champions will keep coming back to play the Plantation Course for many years to come.
